My Little Happiness Review: Cinematography, Music, Story, Pacing
The My Little Happiness review is not about the animation since this is not an anime but rather a Chinese live-action drama. This drama delivers a bright cinematography and set design which help liven up the otherwise workplace and hospital centric storyline. Xing Fei and Tang Xiaotian share a good chemistry which makes it easy to enjoy every petty argument and occasional quiet moment between the two. Moreover, a good music playlist accompanies this drama which plays well along with the lovers' quiet moments. Overall, this drama has a good pacing but there were some mid-season episodes which featured side-character relationship drama.
What I Liked:
- Good chemistry between the leads: Cong Rong and Wen Shaoqing keep the drama engaging with their bickers and their silent moments
- Funny premise: The idea of landlords, neighbors, childhood friends and co-workers is used in an entertaining way
- Good supporting cast: The Wen Rang and Jiang Yao, Chen Cu and San Bao relationship arc adds spice without overshadowing the main plot
What I Did Not Like:
- Slow mid-plot: A few episodes were slow-paced as far as the central plot was concerned
- Predictable tropes: Most of this series' romantic developments have been seen in similar C-dramas
Spoiler Alert
The final episodes of My Little Happiness see Wen Shaoqing declare his feelings for Cong Rong with the blessing of Wen family. The final episode also features the couple's children, Wen Qing and Wen Gu who are seen in a flash-forward.
Viewer's Reviews and Ratings
- ★★★★☆ | " I like how banter between the lead pair in this drama was entertaining and never felt like fanservice "
- ★★★★☆ | " Cong Rong and Wen Shaoqing slowly finding each other was exactly the kind of development I was looking for in this kind of a trope "
- ★★★☆☆ | " It was a good concept but some episodes ran a bit slow with regards to the main plot "
- ★★★★☆ | " The landlord-neighbor-childhood-friend combination was not supposed to work but somehow it did work "
- ★★★★☆ | This drama is very much about romance but it made for a feel-good cozy watch with just enough drama and plot to keep viewers engaged
Final Verdict
I can say with certainty that My Little Happiness is a perfect drama for the lighthearted yet emotionally engaging romance drama connoisseur. The childhood romance between Cong Rong and Wen Shaoqing provides enough of a basis for their relationship for the duration of this drama and the addition of lawyer and surgeon professions provide ample material for the development of their relationship. My favorite part about Shaoqing is that the knowledge about his childhood with Cong Rong was not just a one-time reveal but rather used well to develop the slow-burn romance between the two. The existence of additional relationships helps move the plot whenever the main pair's situations are dragging it down unnecessarily. Having said that, the 28 episode count, romantic atmosphere, good chemistry between the leads, humor, medical aspects and an ending that had everything make this drama a good watch for anyone who likes such things.
