Principal photography took place in London from April to early July 2025, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, known for his handheld, visceral style on films like 28 Years Later, shot the film to stay close to Gadot as she moves through the city in real time.

The Runner Story & Plot

The story follows Maia Marten (Gal Gadot), a high-powered London attorney and single mother about to prosecute a major murder trial with the help of a protected star witness. On what starts as a routine morning run after dropping her young son Noah off at school, Maia gets a call from an anonymous voice (Damian Lewis) informing her that Noah has been taken. The demand is simple and merciless: keep running, follow every instruction exactly, and tell no one, or her son, who is diabetic, will be deliberately harmed.

What follows is a real-time race across London as Maia is forced to choose between her son's life and the case she's built her career on, all while trying to figure out who's really behind the plot and why.

The Runner Main Cast & Characters

Main Roles

Gal Gadot as Maia Marten

Character Description: Gadot spends nearly the entire film in motion, playing a woman forced to weigh her son's safety against her professional convictions in real time.

Damian Lewis as The Caller
The unseen, anonymous voice issuing Maia's instructions.
Character Description: Lewis provides the film's central menace entirely through voice work, dictating Maia's movements from the shadows.

Rory Wilmot as Noah Marten
Maia's young son, who is kidnapped at the start of the film.
Character Description: Noah's medical condition raises the stakes of the ticking-clock premise from the opening minutes.

Alfred Enoch as Ted
A figure connected to Maia's professional and personal circle during the ordeal.
Character Description: Ted's role ties into the case Maia is trying to protect even as her son's safety hangs in the balance.

Supporting Roles

Phoenix Di Sebastiani as Tafa
A recurring figure Maia encounters during her run through the city.
Character Description: One of several strangers whose paths cross with Maia's over the course of the film's frantic timeline.

Hélder Fernandes as Buddy

Nathan Kirby as Wiry Dude
A supporting character appearing during the film's central chase sequence.
Character Description: Adds to the tension of Maia's unpredictable path through the city.

The Runner Review: Cinematography, Music & Pacing

Anthony Dod Mantle's handheld cinematography is the film's clearest strength, capturing Maia's sprint through a rotating cast of London locations in quick, colorful, on-the-move sequences that give the film real kinetic energy. Tom Hodge's score keeps pace with the constant motion, reinforcing the sense of urgency scene to scene. Where the film struggles is in its writing, critics have widely noted that the plotting doesn't hold up to scrutiny once the adrenaline wears off, and the film's 84-minute runtime leaves little room for its ideas to develop much beyond the central chase.

What I liked:

  • Kinetic camerawork: The London-spanning chase sequences are shot with real energy and a strong sense of place.
  • Gadot's physical commitment: She carries the film's nonstop momentum convincingly from start to finish.
  • Tight runtime: At under 90 minutes, the film doesn't overstay its welcome.

What I didn't like:

  • Thin plotting: Critics have widely pointed out that the central mystery doesn't hold together under closer examination.
  • Underused supporting cast: Damian Lewis's role as "The Caller" leans on voice menace alone rather than a fully realized antagonist.

Spoiler Note

This review avoids revealing who is ultimately behind Noah's kidnapping or how Maia's race against the clock resolves.
