Hope Story & Plot

Wildfires have severed communications around the small border community of Hope Harbor, near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, and reinforcements are being diverted elsewhere. That leaves a local police chief and his rookie deputy as the only line of defense for a village full of elderly residents. Then a mysterious creature begins to stalk the area.

At the same time, a local hunting party heads deep into the mountains to track the creature down, only to find that the hunters have become the hunted. As the two storylines run in parallel, what starts as a tense standoff between humans and something unknown escalates into a much larger tragedy.

Hope Review: Cinematography, Music, Story & Pacing

Na Hong-jin has always been good at building dread out of ordinary places, and the burning, smoke-choked border village is a great setting for it. Hong Kyung-pyo's cinematography keeps the mood tense and claustrophobic even in wide landscapes, and Michael Abels, best known for his work with Jordan Peele, brings an unsettling score.

At Cannes, reviews praised Na's action direction but were more mixed on the creature effects, so expect some visual effects that don't fully match the quality of the filmmaking around them. At roughly two and a half hours, the film also asks for patience. The slow build before the creature fully takes over is where it works best, and some viewers may find the second half heavier and more overwhelming.

Critics have been broadly positive. Rotten Tomatoes sits at about 77% from 44 reviews, and Metacritic at 68 out of 100, which counts as generally favorable. These figures can change as more reviews are added.

What I Liked

  • Na Hong-jin's Return: His trademark sense of dread and moral heaviness is all over this film.
  • Two Storylines Running in Parallel: The village defense and the hunting party keep the tension moving from two directions.
  • Strong Korean Lead Cast: Hwang Jung-min and Zo In-sung bring real weight to the human side of the story.
  • Action Craft: The action sequences have been singled out as a highlight, including a Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema at the New York Asian Film Festival.

What I Didn't Like

  • Uneven Visual Effects: The creature work drew criticism from several early reviewers.
  • Long Runtime: The film is around 156 minutes and can feel heavy as it escalates.
  • Bleak Tone: This is not a feel-good watch, and the human tragedy hits hard by the end.

Hope Spoiler Note

This article avoids describing what the creatures actually are, how the two storylines connect, and how the story ends.

Hope Viewer Reviews and Ratings

Illustrative sample lines written to reflect the general critical reception, not quotes from real viewers.

★★★★☆ | "Na Hong-jin is back, and the dread in the first half is as good as anything he's done."

★★★★☆ | "Hwang Jung-min makes the police chief feel like a real person under real pressure."

★★★☆☆ | "Great ideas and great action, but the VFX pull me out of it at times."

★★★★☆ | "The parallel hunting storyline gave the whole film an extra layer of tension."

★★★☆☆ | "Strong, but long and bleak. Go in prepared."

Final Thoughts on Hope

Hope combines sci-fi horror, survival, action and human tragedy in a tense story set in an isolated Korean border village. Na Hong-jin's direction, the atmospheric cinematography and the performances give the film plenty of weight, while the long runtime, bleak tone and uneven creature effects may divide viewers.

If you enjoy slow-building Korean thrillers with unsettling mysteries and intense action, Hope may be worth adding to your watchlist. Check the official regional streaming or theatrical listings for confirmed language and subtitle options.
