The Polygamist Story & Plot

The story follows Joyce Gomora, a social media influencer who presents the picture of marital perfection online, right up until her wealthy husband Jonasi's years of secret relationships and ongoing betrayal finally come to light. What begins as a private scandal quickly spirals into a full-blown family crisis, as Joyce's carefully curated public image and her entire family begin to crumble around her.

As the fallout unfolds, the Gomora family's layers of secrets, rivalries, and hidden resentments come pouring out, with other women in Jonasi's life, including the scheming Matipa, maneuvering their way deeper into the family's empire. The series uses a nonlinear timeline to build its scandal slowly, jumping between the public, polished version of the Gomora family and the much messier truth hiding underneath it.

The Polygamist Review: Cinematography, Music & Pacing

Directors Akin Omotoso and Rolie Nikiwe lean fully into the heightened, melodramatic style the genre calls for, using the show's nonlinear structure to keep revealing new layers of the Gomora family's secrets rather than laying everything out upfront. At 22 episodes, the show has plenty of room to let its sprawling cast of rivals, affairs, and power struggles breathe, and critics have praised how effectively it builds characters audiences love to hate. The pacing leans into classic soap opera rhythms, big confrontations, slow-burn reveals, and constant shifting alliances, which works well for the format even if it won't appeal to viewers looking for more restrained drama.

What I liked:

• Compelling scandal plotting: The slow reveal of the family's secrets keeps the drama escalating effectively across the season.
• Strong central performances: Gugu Gumede and S'Dumo Mtshali anchor the emotional stakes convincingly.
• Great villain writing: Reviewers have specifically praised how satisfying it is to watch Jonasi face the consequences of his actions.

What I didn't like:

• Heavy melodrama: The soap opera style and heightened conflicts won't suit viewers wanting subtler family drama.
• Large ensemble: With this many characters and subplots, some supporting figures get less development than others.

Spoiler Note

This review avoids detailing how Jonasi's fate plays out, or how the rivalry between Joyce, Matipa, and Essie ultimately resolves by the season's finale.
